image: text listing my work eligible for awards this year, which will be listed out below in greater detail
It’s that time of year again, when writers everywhere toot their own horns about the works they’ve had published, remind folks “these are eligible for things, you know!” and ask for readers’ consideration.
So! I had fiction published this year, all three are eligible for things, you know, and I kindly ask for readers’ consideration!
Short Fiction
“The God, Descendant” (848 words), Uncanny, February
A fantasy flash piece about one god who’s eternally rising and another who’s eternally falling. I like what I did with some of the imagery here, and I always felt it was a very appropriate piece to have go out in February (as it did for subscribers, IIRC, though it didn’t become free to read till March and has that cover date). The piece has some Valentine’s-adjacent vibes, imo.
“A Carapace of Coral” (approx. 3700 words), FIYAH, April
A horror short story that leans very hard into my “hi, I’m a mother” feels. It was originally drafted when I was first in a suitable headspace to begin processing the hard years of parenting a toddler during a worldwide pandemic. I also got to allude to it in October this year when I was on my first in-person panel at World Fantasy Con, titled “Monstrous Mothers.” This story most definitely applies!
It’s not free to read, but if interested parties would like to check it out for awards-nominating purposes, please reach out via my contact form and I can get you sorted.
Novelette
“Sever and Bind” (approx 10k words), Beneath Ceaseless Skies, May
A dark fantasy novelette about a young woman’s thorny relationship with her ghost mom, blood magic, sand-made-from-the-bones-of-dead-gods magic, and a very good ghost doggo. The story got a kind callout from Charles Payseur here.
At a tiny bit under 10k, I realize it’s the longest one of my published pieces this year and it’s a bigger ask to have people check it out. But Charles’s kind comments aside, I feel this one largely disappeared into the ether, but it has a big spot in my heart, so I’d appreciate readers who need to pick only one of my works to read, to read this one!
And that’s it! Thanks as always for reading and for your consideration.
